Baillie Scott is famous for his architecture, interior designs and involvement with the Arts and Crafts movement. Born in Ramsgate, his early training was in 1886-89 with Major C.E. Davis, City Architect of Bath. After his marriage in 1889 to Florence Kate Nash he moved to the Isle of Man. Initially he worked with Frederick Saunderson a Civil Engineer before setting up his own architectural practice in Athol Street. He also designed and had built the Red House, Douglas and lived there until he left the Island.
In his early years he was a contemporary of Voysey and Mackintosh and later with the Art Nouveau movement. He knew and worked with the artist and designer Archibald Knox on some of his interior design features. Quite a number of his properties survive in the Island in varying states of originality. There are also surviving residential and business premises in England and Europe. He returned to live in England in 1901 and continued in practice until 1939.
The Museum collections include a locally made settle, an iron fire grate with dogs, a copper panel and a stained glass window. The latter are usually on display in the Social History Galleries at the Manx Museum in Douglas.

The extract below is condensed from a report which appeared in the Isle of Man Weekly Times’ coverage of the Fine Art and Industrial Guild Exhibition held in Douglas, December 1896.
An exhibit which attracted a great deal of attention was “The Manxman” pianoforte, manufactured by Messrs John Broadwood and Sons from the design of Mr H. Baillie Scott.
This instrument is so named because its designer hails from the Isle of Man.
Externally the piano resembles, when shut up, a treasure chest of the time of Queen Elizabeth. The wood is beautifully-figured dark green oak. Prominent features in the appearance of the front are the four horizontal strap-hinges. Yet, although this piano is different in appearance to what one is accustomed to, it is by no means eccentric, or bizarre.
By reason of its simplicity in detail, and its appropriateness in shape for the purpose intended, the piano looks well anywhere, and harmonises with any style of furniture. The doors of the piano when opened, and the lid when raised, act as additional sounding boards. The doors, when half closed, afford the pianist a pleasant sense of privacy, almost akin - it has been said - to that sometimes felt by an organist in the cosy “loft” of a large church.
In the “Manxman” piano the method of lighting is as effective as it is pretty. At either end of the keyboard, and within the case, is a candle holder or sconce. Where electric lighting is laid on in the pianist’s house, invisible attachments can be readily adjusted to these sconces. In the “Manxman” piano, a decided advantage is its music desk. The desk is formed by one continuous ledge running along the front over the keys as in a church organ, and a hinged piece at the top gives support to the largest music books. The “Manxman” piano, similar to that illustrated here, is 65 guineas in price.
