A separate space for women experiencing complications in early pregnancy, was officially opened at Noble’s Hospital last week (12 July 2024).
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) is a space dedicated to supporting families through the critical early stages of pregnancy, where women can be assessed and treated in a location separate to other maternity patients. This unit has a separate entrance and exit, meaning that those attending do not need to use the main hospital entrance if they do not want to.
The Bluebell Suite is a private room in the same unit, designed specifically for parents experiencing miscarriage and baby loss. It is a sanctuary designed to offer privacy, compassion, comfort and care during a profoundly difficult time. The cosy, welcoming space was designed by Vicky Christian, a Manx resident who sadly experienced multiple miscarriages and a complicated pregnancy between 2018 and 2020. She is using her understanding to help improve services for others, by working with Manx Care’s Integrated Women, Children and Families Care Group to respond to the needs of women and their families.
Vicky said:
'These new facilities represent a real commitment to change. They symbolise the dedication to providing the highest standard of care, not only medically but also emotionally. Thank you for being here today as we embark on this vital journey of hope, healing and renewed dedication to compassionate care.'
Both spaces were very kindly funded by the Friends of Noble’s Hospital, with matching support from the Scheinberg family. Kevin Kneen from the Friends of Noble’s commented:
'We are delighted to be here today to witness the opening of the EPAU and the Bluebell Suite. The true need for the unit was clearly explained to us, and the passion to develop the unit was understood by us all, making it an easy decision to agree to fund this space. I’m confident that these new facilities will radically improve the quality of service and infrastructure for patients.'
Linda Thompson, Clinical Care Group Manager for Women, Children and Families, added:
'I would like to recognise all of the women who have been brave enough to share their stories with us – we have made time and listened to every woman’s experience.
'I would also like to thank Vicky, who was the catalyst for this project – without her, we would not be where we are today; she has been the voice of women on the Island.
'A huge thank you to the Friends of Noble’s, who have listened, understood, and prioritised the women of the Isle of Man.
'And finally thank you to our colleagues, who have informed where we are today by delivering the care, recognising the gaps in service, and acknowledging that this is a lifetime experience that stays with women forever.'
Teresa Cope, Manx Care’s CEO, officially opened the EPAU, commenting:
'It is lovely to see this come to fruition – this is the first step in a positive change for the Island. The Bluebell Suite was officially opened by Vicky, and the full unit will be available from Friday this week for those who require these specialised services. I would also like to add my sincere thanks to the Friends of Noble’s for their support on this project, and their ongoing support for Noble’s Hospital and Manx Care.'
